Wheelchair Ramp Building
As a charitable endeavor, the chapter takes great pride in its wheelchair ramp program.
Through the volunteer efforts of our chapter members, EM-NARI builds wheelchair ramps each
year for eligible applicants. While demand typically outpaces our resources, the chapter
typically builds one ramp annually for a needy family, with a wheelchair-bound resident
in Eastern Massachusetts.
Those interested in having a ramp built must submit an application, which is then reviewed
by a committee charged with selection of recipients and planning the building project.
Each ramp is custom designed for each particular application and constructed in accordance
with local building and ADA codes. The entire project is done at no cost to the
homeowner, and financial need is a determining factor in the selection process.
Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis and applicants will be notified
as soon as possible.
Those approved for construction will be contacted and to arrange an interview and a
site inspection meeting and finalize eligibility and scheduling. Plans will be drawn,
permits secured, and start date scheduled.
The construction project typically takes place on a Saturday and takes one day
to complete. One day of pre-construction work is usually scheduled for the pouring
of concrete footings.
For members
All available and interested members are called upon to participate in the wheelchair ramp building
projects. The dates and location will be communicated to the membership through the
newsletter and other announcements. The project is coordinated by the committee and
others who have volunteered to take the lead, but members with all skill levels are sought
to help, and donations from supplier members are always most needed and welcome.
