Remodelers share that finding skilled workers is one of their greatest business challenges. Currently there are more than 2,500 students studying carpentry in Career and Vocational Technical Education (CVTE) programs in Massachusetts. Many of those students would benefit from connecting with business leaders in the professional remodeling industry to learn more about our work and the broad range of career opportunities that are available. Through the EM NARI Youth Remodeling Career Day, we hope to inspire those students to consider a career in remodeling.
Our first Youth Remodeling Career Day was held in October 2016. The event drew 500 CVTE students from more than 30 classes around the state. Students ranged from 10th-12th grade and were studying carpentry, electrical, plumbing or HVAC in their school programs. Through the event, students worked directly with EM NARI members on a variety of hands on building activities. The event also including informational expo booths, a speaker series, and mini mock-interviews with business leaders.
Teacher Testimonial: “Thank you for the youth remodeling Career day. The students enjoyed it and other instructors were comparing it to the JLC Live show in Providence. I believe there is great potential in what you have accomplished and may do in the future. The interviews were very important as the students discovered the basics of an interview in a non-threatening way. They all learned a lot and were thankful of the experience. I personally enjoyed the interaction with the contractors presenting. They were "cutting edge" in their fields.”
