When EM NARI members learned of a World War II Veteran and his wife struggling to safely remain in their home, they answered the call.  Significant health challenges were making it difficult for Mr. and Mrs. C to stay in the Roxbury home they loved.  Working in partnership with Rebuilding Together Boston, NARI members transformed the space into a safe and comfortable space for them.

The project, led by Steve Greenberg of Steveworks, LLC in Newton, involved moving the basement laundry to the first floor, removing an obstructing wall in the kitchen, adding handrails for safety, and replacing the outdated cabinets and fixtures.  According to Greenberg, “It was great to know that the homeowner no longer had to carry her laundry down a treacherous flight of basement stairs backwards!" Eighteen NARI member companies were involved as donors and volunteers on the project.

Beyond the renovation of the first floor of the triple decker home, work on a second floor continues and will feature renovations to an upstairs kitchen and the installation of high efficiency heating system.  This update, along with other energy saving elements of the project, will yield savings for the couple’s budget.  In reflecting on the project, Greenberg commented, “It was very rewarding to be able to do what I love to do - and see that it made such a big difference in the quality and safety of this couple’s home.”  Volunteers are still needed for late April/ early May to complete the project.  Contact Michelle at admin@emnari.org if you would like to participate!

Thanks to these companies who have volunteered or donated materials for this project.

Rebuilding Together Boston has been helping Boston homeowners in need for 25 years.  They help preserve affordable housing and homeownership; stabilize neighborhoods, reduce the risk of homelessness; and reduce energy costs for low-income Boston homeowners by facilitating critical repairs in the homes of low-income Boston homeowners. Requests from homeowners range from repairing leaky roofs, replacing drafty windows, updating outdated electrical wiring, or painting. All work is done at no cost to the recipients. Each year, Rebuilding Together hosts National Rebuilding Day on a Saturday in late April.  They are recruiting volunteers now.  Email them at: mailto:info@rebuildingtogetherboston.org.
